Few environments in the world combine such a high level of biodiversity and endemism as the highlands and mountain ranges of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Amid high-altitude grasslands, rocky outcrops, and low-growing vegetation adapted to cold temperatures, lives a unique bird community — many species found only in this region of the planet and nowhere else on Earth.

For those who love birdwatching, these mountains represent one of the most special destinations in South America: a true sanctuary for rare and endemic species, many of

which may be completely new additions to a birder’s life list.

Why are high-altitude environments so special?

The high-altitude grasslands and cloud forests of southeastern Brazil function as true biological islands. Formed on the tops of mountain ranges isolated by valleys covered with lower-elevation forests, these areas are home to bird populations that, over thousands of years, have become genetically and morphologically distinct from their lowland counterparts.

The result is an exceptionally high level of endemism: dozens of species can only be observed within this high-altitude belt, ranging from approximately 800 to more than 2,000 meters above sea level, particularly in the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar mountain ranges.

In addition, the cold climate, sparse vegetation, and iconic Araucaria trees of the southern Brazilian highlands create unique ecological niches occupied by birds that would not survive in other types of environments.

This combination of dramatic landscapes — mountain peaks, mist, and high-altitude vegetation — with a remarkable and often elusive birdlife is what makes this itinerary so sought after by birders from around the world.
